Be An Angel
Home is Where the Heart Is
Stephen was an energetic teenager with dreams of becoming a U.S. Marine. That all changed the day after his 20th birthday in April 2010 when he fell ill with what he thought was food poisoning. Three weeks later he was diagnosed with idiopathic cardial myopathy, and enlargement and hardening of the heart muscle.
Stephen, now 24, spent the better part of the next four years bedridden, in and out of hospitals fighting for his life. He battled through organ failure, strokes, sepsis and other complications before receiving his heart transplant in May 2014 at Mayo Clinic. During this time Stephens’ dad James, was at his side and spent the past year and a half at Gabriel House of Care.
“Being a single dad of three children and leaving my job to take care of Stephen, was very difficult,” James recalled. “Thankfully I found a bright light to keep me going on the toughest days and that was Gabriel House. Being surrounded by people who can truly understand what you’re experiencing, is incredibly comforting and staying there eased some of the financial burdens. The unconditional support we received from the guests, staff and volunteers was amazing.”
Become an Angel
At Gabriel House we provide an affordable home where families like Stephen and James can stay while receiving life-saving medical care. But we need your help! As a Gabriel House Angel, your personal gift will help support the programs and services we provide our guests all year round.
Your Angel can be in honor or in memory of someone special to you and will be displayed on our “Angel Tree” in the lobby for all our families to enjoy this holiday season. Thank you for supporting the many guests who come through our doors everyday.
